William Lye was born in Penang, Malaysia and educated in Melbourne, Australia at Monash University and at the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship where he graduated as dux of the Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation degree. He also holds a Master of Laws in Intellectual Property; and a Bachelor of Science majoring in Computer Science. He currently resides in Melbourne, Australia.
Since 2008, William has been the Chair of the Asia Practice section of the Commercial Bar Association of Victoria, with responsibility for the development of strategic alliances between Victoria and Asia. He practises as a commercial and corporate barrister in Australia. He is also an Accredited Mediator and a Victorian Bar Conciliator, and Advocacy Trainer.
William is the Past President of the Chinese Professional and Business Association of Victoria; a former Honorary Adviser to the Federation of Chinese Associations of Victoria; and a founding Board Member of the Asian Australian Lawyers Association. He is also a Language Ambassador, an initiative of Community Languages Australia and the Victorian Government. He is passionate about education, and serves as Chief Examiner of Contract Law at Monash University Law Chambers.
William sits on the boards of several private companies involved in the facilitation of entrepreneurial transactions, corporate advisory and start-up ventures. He also serves on several non-profit organisations, and is currently on the Victorian Advisory Board of the Starlight Children’s Foundation Australia, a global children’s charity. William also sits on the Global Advisory Council for the World Chinese Economic Summit, and is the WCES Principal Representative in Australia.
In October 2014, William was appointed as an Australian Day Ambassador for Victoria.
