Chairman, Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council (APRC) / former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Thailand
Elected to the Parliament of Thailand in the general elections of 2001, Professor Dr. Sathirathai was appointed the Minister of Foreign Affairs, serving the full four-year term before being appointed Deputy Prime Minister after the 2005 general elections and concurrently as Acting Minister of Culture in 2006. Between 2004-2006, he was the endorsed ASEAN candidate for the position of the United Nations Secretary-General. He had also been Minister of Finance in a previous government in 1995- July 1996 and was a policy adviser to several Thai Prime Ministers before then, dating back to 1988.
Receiving his Doctorate (S.J.D.) and Master of Law (LL.M.) from the Harvard Law School, after completing his Master of Law and Diplomacy (M.A.L.D.) at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and Bachelor of Law (LL.B. Honours) at Chulalongkorn University, Professor Dr. Sathirathai has held many important positions in the academia including Director of Law and Development Research Center, Dean of the Faculty of Law of Chulalongkorn University, Members of the Law Drafting Committee of the Juridical Council, Visiting Professor at the Watson Institute for International Studies, Brown University, a Senior Fellow at the Belfer Center of Harvard University’s Kennedy School, Visiting Scholar, Harvard Law School and five terms as Distinguished Scholar (2009 to 2014) at the Faculty of Law, Chulalongkorn University.
At present, Professor Dr.Sathirathai is the Chairman of the Asian Peace and Reconciliation Council (APRC), an organization comprised of 25 distinguished members of former Heads of State and Government, former ministers, as well as leading academics, from around the world, set up to offer good offices in promoting peaceful dialogue in Asia, Member of the Board of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), President of the Asian Society of International Law (AsianSIL, 2014-2015), President of the Saranrom Institute of Foreign Affairs Foundation, Chancellor of Eastern Asia University and Chairman of the University Council of the Rajamangala University of Technology Isan, Member of the Asian Advisory Group of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He is also a Member of the Honorary Council of the Institute for Global Law and Policy, Harvard Law School, U.S.A.
Professor Dr. Sathirathai has extensive experience in the corporate sector, having been Chairman of PTT Exploration and Production Plc. (PTTEP), Thai Oil Co., Ltd., and Laem Thong Bank Public Company Ltd., as well as board director in several other companies. He is currently Chairman of the Board of Siam Premier International Law Office Ltd., and affiliated Offices in Laos and Myanmar, Chairman of Pepsi-Cola (Thai) Trading Co., Ltd., Advisory Chairman for Asia, and International Strategic Board Member, SICPA S.A., Switzerland, Advisory Chairman of AEC Securities Plc, and Chairman of the Board of KPN Academy Co. Ltd.
Professor Dr. Sathirathai’s publications include Third World Attitudes Toward International Law: An Introduction with Professor Frederick Snyder published by Marinus Nijhoff Publishers (1987), Thailand International Trade Law (Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration), and The Role of International Economic Law (in Thai, 2010). He has published articles in a number of academic journals such as the Harvard Journal of International Law, Malaya Law Review, and the Harvard Human Rights Journal, Texas International Law Journal and World Bank Economic Review. His recent speeches include topics that encompass international economic law, rule of law, ASEAN integration, new Asian legal and economic landscape, China’s Belt and Road Initiative, Functional Cooperation in the South China Sea and peace and security.
Among the decorations he has received are the Knight Grand Cordon (Special Class) of the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant (Thailand), Commander Grand Cross (Sweden), Grand Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau (Netherlands), The Most Honourable Order of Seri Paduka Mahkota Brunei (Brunei Darussalam), Bahrain Decoration First Class (Bahrain), and Congressional Medal of Achievement (The Philippines). He was awarded as Distinguished Alumni of the Faculty of Law, Chulalongkorn University in 1996 and 2003. He received Honorary Doctorate Degree in Public Administration from Eastern Asia University in 2006, and Honorary Doctorate Degree of Philosophy in Social Science from Mae Fah Luang University in 2014.
Professor Dr. Sathirathai is married to Thanpuying Dr. Suthawan Sathirathai. They have one son whose name is Dr. Santitarn Sathirathai.
