Dato Sri Vijay Eswaran is a prominent Malaysian entrepreneur and businessman. He is the current executive chairman of the QI Group, one of Asia’s leading business conglomerate with interest in direct selling, retail, financial services, hospitality, education and technology.
He attended the London School of Economics, where he graduated with a degree in socio-economics in 1984 and earned his MBA from Southern Illinois University in 1986. An economist-turned-entrepreneur, he co-founded a US$500 million entity which has chalked impressive heights, with a consistent double-digit growth, since it began its operations in 1998 under his leadership.
The Penang-born captain of industry, who grew up in various cities and towns of Peninsular Malaysia, is also a best-selling author, prolific speaker and philanthropist. He pioneered the Group’s venture into e-commerce business and was instrumental in steering QI into a leading direct selling player not only in Asia, but also the Middle East, Europe and Africa.
Prior to establishing the Group in Hong Kong, Dato Sri Vijay has had stints at various blue chip companies in Europe, Canada, Australia and the US in the 1990s before returning to Asia. With a strong team of like-minded individuals with diverse nationalities and expertise supporting him, he built a multi-business conglomerate with regional offices in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand and a presence in nearly 30 countries throughout a wide range of subsidiary companies.
Dato Sri Vijay is the current Chairman of the University Council of Quest International University Perak (QIUP) in Malaysia, which he has helped to establish in partnership with the State Government of Perak. He is also a member of the advisory board of the Global Business Council and Corporate Malaysia Roundtable in Malaysia.
A highly respected speaker, he lectures around the world at leading universities, management and business leadership forums including being a regular at the World Economic Forum events. As an author, he has four successful books to his credit of which his first book, In the Sphere of Silence has been acclaimed internationally with translations in seven languages and endorsements by international authors.
Dato Sri Vijay’s foray into the world of sports through the QI Group has earned international recognition for his flagship brand, QNET, first through the partnership with Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Racing Team which was later named Marussia F1 Racing. He vroomed from F1 to Football with the partnership with 2013 English Premier League champions, Manchester City Football Club. His latest venture is in tennis with the appointment of former women’s world number one, Martina Hingis as QNET’s Brand Ambassador.
Dato Sri Vijay is also a prominent philanthropist, recognized for his immense contribution to the community through his two foundations – RYTHM and Vijayaratnam Foundations. He was hailed by Forbes Asia in 2011 in its annual listing of Heroes of Philanthropy.
A highly decorated man, he has received numerous awards from industry observers and international organizations alike. Among the accolades are the CEO of the Year by the ASEAN Business Advisory Council at the Malaysian Business Awards 2013, the ‘Special Award for Education Entrepreneurship and Leadership’ at the 18th Malaysian Education Summit 2014, the Outstanding Entrepreneur of the Year award at the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Award 2012 and the NGI Excellence Award for Business Leadership and Philanthropy by the Indian Diaspora.
