Founder & Group CEO, East West One Group, Malaysia
Founder and Group CEO of East West One Group, Dato’ Dr. Jessie Tang started as a medical doctor in her home state of Kedah before becoming an entrepreneur. Although she was trained as a medical doctor, her dream and passion has always been to run her own business.
In early 2000, the palm oil industry was booming in Malaysia. She seized the opportunity and ventured into the oil palm plantation industry in Sabah in mid-2000 via her flagship company, East West One Consortium. Sabah was chosen as her location of choice in view of the suitable and favourable agronomic factors and weather conditions there for oil palm cultivation.
Today, East West One Group has interest in various businesses within the oil palm value chain. Although East West One Group started with oil palm plantation development and management, the group has since added palm oil seedling distribution and FFB collection centres into its enlarged business portfolio. The group plans to have its own palm oil mill in the near future to be an integrated oil palm plantation player. Besides this, East West One Group is also the leading and largest Companies Commission of Malaysia-approved oil palm plantation interest scheme operator and manager in Malaysia in terms of total land bank of close to 30,000 acres.
Although most of the group’s businesses are presently based in Malaysia, Dato’ Dr. Jessie is expanding the group’s regional business presence into Indonesia, specifically in the oil palm and mining industries.
Last but not least, Dato’ Dr. Jessie is a member of Malaysian Estate Owners’ Association, serves as advisor for Sabah’s Kobe Osaka Karate Club, and a board member of the Women’s Institute of Management, Malaysia. She is also actively involved in the group’s corporate social responsibility initiatives and projects, particularly in empowering and improving the standard of living of women.
