Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Malaysia
For more than a decade, The Hon. Datuk Seri Ir. Dr Wee Ka Sionghas faithfully served his constituents in Ayer Hitam, Johor as their Member of Parliament. He is also currently a Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, a position he has held since June 2014.
Previously, he led the Education Ministry as a Deputy Education Minister. Before that, he had served in various roles including as director of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency from 2007 to 2009, advisor to the Johor Juvenile Court from 2004 to 2006, a member of the Malaysian Youth Council from 2004 to 2005, and a member of the National Economic Consultative Council from 1999 to 2000. He also helped formulate Malaysia’s 2001-2010 national economic policy.
His political career began in 1992 when he joined the Johor Bahru Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA). A year later, he was elected its Secretary General (Johor Bahru Division). He went on to hold various roles including as Johor Bahru’s MCA Majidi Branch Chairman, the MCA Johor Bahru Division Youth Chief and the MCA Johor Bahru Division Chairman. Today, he is the Deputy President of the MCA, which is part of Malaysia’s governing BarisanNasional coalition. As Deputy President, Dr Wee has also taken part in events to raise funds for Chinese schools.
Dr Wee graduated from UniversitiTeknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 1997 and went on to pursue a Master’s in Traffic Engineering at NTU from 1993 to 1995 and a PhD in Transportation Planning at the UTM from 1996 to 2001. A qualified Civil Engineer, he is a member of the Board of Engineering Malaysia and a registered engineer with the likes of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC Engineer) and International Association of Engineers. In 2015, Dr Wee was conferred the DarjahGemilang Seri Melaka which carries the title Datuk Seri by the HE Governor of Malacca State.
